Our Weather

Weather Throughout the Year

Being on a peninsula on the West Coast of Scotland and subject to the effects of the Gulf Stream, our climate is mild and moist. We experience moderate temperatures throughout the year, with frosts and snow down at sea level being a rarity. Although our annual rainfall is high, most of this falls in the autumn and winter months, meaning that we get many warm sunny days during the spring and summer months.

To help you pick the best time of year for you to visit, here are a few weather facts based on readings taken by the Lochaber Weather Station located near to the Corran Ferry:

  • On average, the warmest month is July and the coldest month is January.
  • The sunniest month is May, with good levels of sunshine in April, June, July and August.
  • Most rainfall is seen in August and December, although December is the wettest month.
  • Least rainfall is seen in May and October, with May being the driest month.
  • The windiest months are January and February, with the least wind being in July, August and September.

Weather with the Seasons

Summer
The climate is milder in spring making it a good time to visit. There can be some great sunny days mixed with cooler and wet weather. If you prefer the weather to be mild rather than warm, then this time offers a good alternative to the peak summer season. At that time of year, the spring flowers are out and bluebells in particular can be seen everywhere. From March to May the average maximum temperature is 21°C and the average minimum is 4°C.

Summer
Most days in summer range from mild to warm with the possibility of some hotter days here and there. There may be some overcast and humid conditions in the summer. Although warm, this is the busiest time of the year for visitors. From June to August the average maximum temperature is 27°C and the average minimum is 10°C.

Autumn
Days can be pleasantly mild, especially at the start of September but can turn cooler and colder in October and November. Autumn is a good time to visit us as the peak summer season is over and you have the mild temperatures and longer hours of daylight, especially at the start of September. If you do come, you can see some wonderful autumn colours in the oakwoods that surround us. From September to November the average maximum temperature is 18°C and the average minimum is 6°C.

Winter
At this time of year the days are at their shortest and the temperature at its coolest. However, you can get some lovely crisp and clear days so if you don’t mind the cold, you can have a wonderful time here and pretty much have anywhere you go to yourself. From December to February the average maximum temperature is 13°C and the average minimum is 2°C.
